While children as young as 6 months can receive the primary series of either the monovalent Moderna or Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines, bivalent booster shots are not yet authorized for children aged 6 months – 4 years who completed the Pfizer vaccine. The Moderna bivalent booster is available to children who completed the primary series of the Moderna vaccines.

The Food and Drug Administration updated its Emergency Use Authorization for the bivalent covid Vaccine to include children as young as 6 months for both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

If a child has completed their primary Moderna vaccine series, and it has been at least 2 months since the last dose, they are eligible to receive the Moderna Bivalent booster.  

There is currently no recommendation for children in the 6 months to 4-year age group who completed the primary series of their Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to get bivalent booster shots. The FDA states that these children are still adequately protected against the most severe effects of COVID while they prioritize evaluating the safety of the Pfizer-BioNTech booster for this age group.

The data for the Pfizer booster for this age group is expected in January, and the FDA will evaluate it as quickly as possible.

If a child 6 months to 4 years of age has not received all three doses of their primary Pfizer booster, the third dose will now be the updated bivalent booster.

The FDA is expected to receive data on the safety of the Pfizer-BioNTech booster for this age group (who have completed the Pfizer-BioNTech primary series) in January
